Democrats had a 900,000 plurality over Republicans in registration, and with 418,756 votes, more Democrats than Republicans had voted. Nevertheless, Nixon had beaten Douglas by 169,349 votes.

Herman Perry predicted that Nixon would need a united front to win in November. His contender had built a smooth, efficient organization, traveled throughout the state, developed a strong following in the north, raised enough money to pay off his primary debts, and faced a tough opponent. Nixon, like Douglas, was positive about a November victory, expected to campaign energetically, and was ready for the ordeal. Unlike her, he had moved into the political center while maintaining his appeal to the conservative right. His job would be to convince uncommitted Democrats to rally to his cause.52
